Pietà, mercede aita

Originally for Soprano and basso continuo.
Original Language: Italian
Madrigal

Pietà mercede aita
A quest'alme dolenti,
ò amici, ò parenti,
che’l sol godete della mortal vita
Ecco morte ch’ardita,
Superba, inesorabile spietata
già vi minaccia armata,
pietade, Ohimè di noi
per ch’altri un giorno
abbia pietà di voi.

Poet:
Michelangelo Buonarroti il giovane
English

Have pity

Madrigal

Have pity, mercy, give help
to these suffering souls.
O friends, o kindred,
who enjoy the sun of mortal life,
see death boldly advancing,
proud, inexorable, cruel,
now menacing you armed.
Oh, have pity on us,
that others one day will have pity on you.

Translated by:

Dr Richard Kolb
