Te lucis ante terminum
Original Language: Latin
Te lucis ante terminum
rerum creator poscimus
ut solita clementia
sis praesul ad custodiam.
Procul recedant somnia
et noctium phantasmata hostemque nostrum comprime
ne polluantur corpora.
Praesta Pater omni potens
per Iesum Christum Dominum
qui tecum in perpetuum
regnat cum sancto spiritu.
Hymn for Compline, attr. St Ambrose
English
Before day’s end,
O creator of all things,
We call upon you
That with your accustomed mercy
You guide and guard us.
May dreams recede far away,
And phantoms of the night.
And overcome our enemy
Lest our bodies be polluted.
Be present, O Father all-powerful,
Through Lord Jesus Christ
Who with you into eternity
Rules with the holy spirit.
